Learning ancient Greek in our modern world isn’t always so easy... this is partly because there aren’t many ancient Greek speakers, teachers who can help the next generation learn. Also, there aren’t so many resources to aid those in their learning journey.

That is why what Eugenia has been doing at Elliniki Agogi has been so important. Not only are they passing the wisdom of their ancestral language, but also creating fun new ways to learn and practice it. 

We were so lucky, in fact, to test out Eugenia’s newest books which teach the alphabet and vocabulary. Frida, in particular, loves the dry erase notebook and will eagerly practice her ancient Greek practice on it. A definite win in for everyone!

Apology: From "ἀπολογία" (apologia), meaning "defense," it originally referred to a formal defense of one's actions or beliefs.

Prologue: From "πρόλογος" (prologos), meaning "before speech," it refers to an introduction to a literary work or play.

Eulogy: From "εὐλογία" (eulogia), meaning "good word," it refers to a speech or writing in praise of someone, typically at a funeral.

Questions:

Activities:

Building “Lego” Blocks!

Did you know that every time you have a dialogue with a friend, listen to a monologue in the theater, or use logic to solve a problem, you are actually speaking a bit of Greek? 

All of these words come from the ancient Greek verb “λέγω,” which means 'to speak' or 'to say.’ Let’s see how the roots and seeds of λέγω open up a whole new world of meaning about communication, logic, and expression!

• Διάλογος (pron. dhiálogos, mean. dialogue): A dialogue is a conversation between two or more people. The Greek root “διά” (dhiá = through) combined with λέγω (légho) gives us the word “dialogue,” meaning to speak through ideas. Through dialogue, we communicate, exchange ideas, and learn from each other. 

• Λογική (pron. loghikí, mean. logic): Logic is the study of reasoning and principles of correct thinking. It comes from the Greek word “λογική” (loghikí), which means “the art of reasoning.” Λέγω gives us “λόγος” (logos), meaning “word” or “reason,” and forms the basis of logical thinking, where words and ideas are carefully connected to form valid conclusions. 

• Μονόλογος (pron. monóloghos, mean. monologue): It comes from “μόνος” (monos = alone) and λέγω, meaning a speech by one person. In plays, movies, or everyday conversation, a monologue is a way for someone to express their thoughts out loud, often as a way of explaining or reflecting on something important. 

• Κατάλογος (pron. katálogos, mean. catalogue): The word “catalogue” has its roots in λέγω too. It comes from “κατά” (katá = according to) and λέγω, meaning a list or enumeration of items, usually arranged in a logical order. A catalog helps us organize and present information in a way that is easy to follow. 

Words like dialogue, logic, monologue and so many more, show us how important λέγω is to the way we communicate and reason today. Speaking, thinking, and expressing  ideas are all connected to the ancient roots of the Greek language. Understanding them helps us see how essential words and speech are in shaping the world around us.

After exploring how the word γράφω has shaped modern words like photography, autograph, and graphic design, let’s see another powerful Ancient Greek word: "γράμμα" (grámma). 

It is the Greek word for letter and just like γράφω, it has given rise to many of the words we use every day. 

Grammar: The Rules of Language  

One of the most important - and obvious - words that comes from γράμμα is “grammar”. Grammar is the set of rules that helps us form sentences and communicate clearly. 

Diagram: Designing Thoughts  

The word diagram incorporates the words γράμμα. A diagram is a simple drawing or chart that helps explain something, often using lines and shapes. The Greek word "διά" (dia) means “through.” So a diagram is literally “a drawing or writing that shows clearly what you have in mind.” 

Telegram: Writing from a Distance  

Just like in the word “telegraph” (which we saw in our "γράφω" article), "telegram" uses the root "γράμμα" to mean “a message written or sent from afar.” The ancient Greeks combined "τῆλε" (tele = far) and γράμμα giving us a word for communicating across long distances.

Program: A List of Things to Be Done  

The word program also has its roots in γράμμα. A program is a list or plan of things that will happen or need to be done, and the word comes from the Greek “πρό” (pro = before) and “γράμμα.” So the full meaning is something written ahead of time. 

Learning about the etymology of words shows us how important the building blocks of language are. Just like letters (or γράμματα) are essential to writing, understanding how these ancient words form our everyday vocabulary helps us better understand the world around us. 

Whether it's through grammar, programs, or diagrams, the influence of "γράμμα" is everywhere!

Time to Write

Do you remember our newest word, “γράφω”(gráphō)? It means "to write" or "to draw" and it has a rich history that stretches back to the early periods of Greek civilization.

In fact, the verb "γράφω" comes from Proto-Indo-European roots related to writing or scratching! In ancient Greek, it was used in various contexts including writing letters, inscriptions, and drawing images. Its usage can be seen in numerous classical texts, indicating its importance in Greek culture.

Today, we can find it in so many words, like photograph, autography and calligraphy... we went over some of the ways it was used last week, but will go into even more this week - plus fun activities and discussions below! 

But first, if you want to recap, you can do so here: 

The legacy of "γράφω" can be seen in modern Greek, where it still means "to write." It has also influenced words in other languages, particularly in terms related to writing and inscriptions, such as "graph," "graphic," and "autograph."

Let’s check out more common words we use in English that contain "γράφω".

Biography: The written account of someone’s life. It combines "bio-" (life) with "graph" (writing).

Telegraph: Combining "tele-" (distant) with "graph," it refers to writing or recording messages over long distances.

Seismograph: A device that writes or records seismic activity. "Seismo-" comes from Greek for "earthquake," and "graph" refers to recording.

Cartography: The art and science of map-making, from "carto-" (map) and "graph" (writing).

“Hey, I Want an Autograph! Can We Take a Photo?” We say these phrases often, when we meet someone famous or capture a special moment with friends. But have you ever thought about where the words autograph and photo come from? They are not just any words, they actually have a deep history!

Both of these words - and many more - come from the Greek word “γράφω” (grá-fo), which means I write. From graphic design to calligraphy, this ancient root has shaped so much of the language we use every day, that it’s worth exploring its roots which go all the way back in the ancient Greek world! 

Graphic Design: Writing Without Words  

Obviously, “graphic” comes from “γράφω”, sounds like it, right? In modern times,  graphic design uses pictures to tell stories instead of words, just like how ancient  writing communicated big ideas through symbols.

“Photography” literally means writing with light! It combines the Greek words “photo” (φῶς = light) and “γράφω”. 

Calligraphy: Artful Writing  

Calligraphy, or beautiful writing, combines “callos” (κάλλος = beauty) and “γράφω”. In  ancient times, people made their writing look as stunning as artwork, and today, we still love using calligraphy to make special letters and invitations. 

Autograph: Your Personal Writing  

When you sign your name, you are giving an autograph, which means “self-writing” (αὐτός = self).

Today’s ancient Greek word of the week is perfect for people! Really!

It is an idea that was born long ago in archaic Greece, but continues in many English words today. With a rich and multifaceted history, deeply embedded in Greek culture, politics, and social organization, it is important to know ancient Greek word "δῆμος" (dēmos).

Meaning "people" or "population," the word "δῆμος"  is thought to derive from the root *dā-, which means "to divide" or "to distribute." This root shows us the idea of a community or a group of people divided from others.

During the early days of ancient Athens, demos referred to a suburb or subdivision of the city... but later it grew to include citizens of Athens (as opposed to slaves or non-citizens) and later to the common people or the citizenry of a community, in contrast to the elite or ruling classes.

This evolution is so important because it explains the words we know today, the ones that come from Demos.

For instance, do you know what a Democracy is? It is from Greek "δημοκρατία" (dēmokratía), combining "δῆμος" (dēmos) meaning "people" and "κράτος" (krátos) meaning "power" or "rule." Democracy refers to a type of government where the power is with the people, either directly or through representatives that they elect.

We also use Demographics ("δημογραφία" (dēmographía), combining "δῆμος" (dēmos) with "γραφή" (graphē) meaning "writing" or "description") to understand populations, especially human populations.

But not all “Demos” derived words are good! 

A Demagogue ( "δημαγωγός" (dēmagōgós), combining "δῆμος" (dēmos) with "ἀγαγός" (agāgós) meaning "leader" or "guide") is considered a bad leader. It’s a person who seeks to gain power by appealing to the emotions, fears, and prejudices of the populace rather than using rational argument...

And an Epidemic is certainly something to be avoided! It comes from "ἐπιδημία" (epidēmía), combining "ἐπί" (epí) meaning "upon" and "δῆμος" (dēmos) and means a virus or disease is affecting a large number of people.

These terms all reflect the influence of the Greek concept of "people" in various aspects of social and political life... both back then and today. It’s a powerful term for the people.

As August draws near to the end, and with it the Summer holidays in the northern parts of the world, so too does our brief review of our Ancient Greek vocabulary.

There are so many fantastic words to learn and not nearly enough time to learn them all! So we’ll certainly press on with new exciting terms next… but before we do, make sure to go over the ones we have already learned to cement them properly. Think of it like building a home - best to start with a solid foundation!

This game is a good one to begin with because depending on the level, you can include the ancient Greek, the pronunciation and the english. Please print out the sheet below and cut it into strips:

Fold up the pieces of paper (or roll them into scrolls!) and put them into a bowl, cup or jar. 

Have children take turns pulling out the word and trying to act it out. When they guess correctly, make sure they recite the word three times in ancient Greek and English. You can also play the game as pictionary and draw instead of acting. 

Once they know the words better, you can cut off just the ancient Greek words for a more advanced version.

Mix them up on a table and try to match the word with the picture. If the words are a little tricky, try doing it with them a few times first and then see if they can do it on their own.

Take the cut out words and pictures from the Mix and Match game above and flip them all over so only the blank side is showing. Place them in neat rows. Flip over two at a time, if they are matching, remove them from the board and get a point. If they aren’t a match, flip them back and try again. Once all the cards have been matched, the person with the most points wins.

If the above games are too advanced, don’t worry! Practice makes perfect. First cut the words out as strips rather than individual blocks. Fold them over and use them as flashcards until the children are comfortable with the words. Once they are, you can cut the cards in half and play the games above.

From Nano to Tera - Size Matters!

Ever wondered how we measure things, from the tiniest speck to the  grandest of ideas? Time to explore the world of prefixes, those special beginnings of words that tell us about size and scale! 

Nano, from the Greek word «νάνος» (pronounced: nános) meaning dwarf or very small, nano helps us talk about things that are incredibly tiny, like atoms and molecules. Nanotechnology, for example, helps scientists build amazing things at the tiniest level, like tiny robots or super small computers. 

Mega, from the Greek word «µέγας» (pronounced: mégas) meaning large or great, “mega” tells us about things that are really big! When we talk about megastars, we are talking about those super famous celebrities that shine bright in the sky. And megacities? Well, they're the biggest and busiest cities in the whole wide world, like New York or Tokyo!

Giga, derived from the Greek word «γίγας» (pronounced: gígas) meaning giant or huge, this is another very ancient word that we find in Hesiod’s “Theogony” (8th B.C). Today, we use gigabytes to talk about super-sized storage units that hold tons of pictures, videos, and games on your  computer or phone. 

Tera, from the Greek word «τέρας» (pronounced: téras) meaning monster.  It is even bigger than giga! We use terabytes to talk about really, really big  amounts of material, like all the information on the internet or how fast  supercomputers can think. 

So, whether it's teeny-tiny nano or super-sized tera, these special words  not only spark our imagination, but also remind us of the remarkable  contribution of the Greek language to the world of technology. From  ancient times to the modern era, Greek words have paved the way for  defining concepts that shape our future, serving as timeless pillars of 

knowledge, guiding us to understand just how big or small things can be in  our amazing world. '

Not all words are equal… some are obscure and rarely used, while others are found and employed day to day. Others still may not seem that important, but actually are at the root of many words. For instance, while today’s word is literally small, its influence is huge!

Μικρόν: A Tiny Word with a Colossal Impact

There are certain words that I call door-openers. One of the most common ones is the word “micro” - in Greek µικρόν (pron.“micrón” meaning small). «Μικρόν» is indeed one of these words that open the door to a world of concepts, innovations, and discoveries. Despite its size, it plays a colossal role in the fields of science, technology, and everyday language. 

A really ancient word, “micro” is something that is small in size but significant in impact. Let’s see some of these micro-words: 

Microbiology, the study of microbes (from micro + bios - which is the Greek word  for “life”), explores the world of tiny organisms or living things. Microchips changed technology, because they allowed for the creation of smaller, more efficient and powerful devices, from computers to smartphones. Micromanage is a type of management with a lot of attention to minor or small details. 

But micro also exists in our daily language! 

A microphone makes tiny sounds bigger, louder, so our voices or music reach farther. A microcosm shows us a small version of the cosmos and a microwave uses tiny waves to cook our food quickly. All of these are examples of how something small can do big things.

And of course a microscope (from micro + scope - which is the Greek word σκοπέω –ῶ - “examine, inspect, look to or into, consider”) allows us to see and discover very, very small things. 

From the microscopic building blocks, to the compact devices that define our  modern existence, “micro” is a door-opener to a vast sphere of knowledge and innovation.

Don't forget to mark off each treasure you find on your list... Once you've completed your hunt, share your discoveries with your family or create a special display to showcase your tiny treasures!

As regular readers may recall, Eugenia Manolidou, the famed director of Elliniki Agogi  and author of our weekly “Ancient Greek Words of the Week” is taking a Παῦσις (pron. páf-sis, meaning pause).

It’s August in Europe and so it’s actually traditional to take the month off. Do you know why? It’s a custom that began in ancient Rome!

The month was originally named Sextilis in Latin because it was the 6th month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, with March being the first month of the year. About 700 BC, it became the eighth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days.

Then in 8 BC, the month was renamed in honor of Emperor Augustus, the first Roman emperor and founder of the Roman Empire. He wanted everyone to really enjoy his month, so he started a big holiday called the Feriae Augusti, or the festival of Emperor Augustus.

Also, August is always a slow month for getting things done, as it’s so very hot! Not much happened anyways, but this way all the people would like Augustus and associate the hot month of August as fun.

Now that you know the history of August, you can review some of your ancient Greek Words - it’s one you’ll automatically enjoy!

Greeking Out On Automagic

Αὐτόµατον: Automaton 

In the labyrinth of the Greek language, there exists a powerful, almost magical word  that has woven its way into countless languages and cultures... and it’s not one you might have ‘automatically’ known is Greek! 

It is the word «Aὐτόµατον» (automaton), pronounced in Greek as “aftómaton,”but it also goes by the nickname “auto”.

Despite its simplicity, this little word holds the key to understanding machines and ideas that shape our modern world. 

It is an ancient word found in the works of the poets Hesiod and Homer and it serves as the base for so many concepts that have changed the way we look and interact with our surroundings. Let's see a few! 

The most immediate word that comes to mind is of course “automatic” itself. From automatic doors that swing open as you approach, to automatic transmissions in automobiles that shift gears, this term includes the idea of self-regulation and efficiency. 

In the world of industry and technology, the word has given rise to the field of automation. Factories, processes, and even homes are now equipped with  automated systems that function without us humans having to do much, making our lives and work much easier! The idea of automation has become essential in so many different types of jobs, from manufacturing to information technology. 

In ancient Greece, “automata” were marvels of engineering, showcasing the  ingenuity of ancient inventors like Ctesibius and Hero of Alexandria. These early  automata paved the way for the amazing machines and robots that we have today.

Self-driving cars are guided by automatic navigation systems, while planes use “autopilot” where they can fly almost completely by themselves. This idea has extended metaphorically to our daily lives, describing moments when we do routine tasks without thinking about them.

In the world of linguistics, the word has given birth to terms like “automaticity”,  describing the ability to perform tasks without conscious effort. Language learners,  for example, strive for automaticity in vocabulary recall and grammatical structures, so they can talk in another language. 

So today, let's celebrate the automagicians - engineers, inventors, and dreamers -  who continue to push the boundaries of what is possible. Because, with each  breakthrough, we are not just witnessing progress...we are part of a great legacy that began with the ingenious minds of antiquity. 

As you go about your day, surrounded by the automagic marvels that have become an integral part of our existence, take a moment to appreciate how ancient wisdom and modern ingenuity have come together.

We will continue looking UP with today’s Ancient Greek Word of the Week: γαλαξίας. 

I know I shouldn’t pick favorites... but this word is definitely in my top ten of ancient Greek terms (and that’s a big claim!)

That’s because it’s a word we all know without (necessarily) knowing the fantastic myth behind it. Learning terms like this is like having x-ray spec to see into our mythic past. How cool!

Got (Cosmic) Milk?

So many words regarding the stars, the skies and the heavens come to us from Greek mythology.  One such term that has a fascinating mythological story is  “galaxy,” in Greek «γαλαξίας» (galaxías).  

The story begins with Hercules, the son of Zeus and Alcmena, whose birth made Hera, Zeus's wife, extremely mad. Fearing Hera's hostility, Alcmena left the infant  Hercules on a hill to face an uncertain fate. However, Athena, the goddess of wisdom, intervened and changed the course of Hercules' life. Athena brought the child to Mount Olympus, where he was raised among the gods. 

A crucial moment in this celestial epic occurred when Athena gave Hera the baby Hercules to nurse. In a divine twist, Hercules bit down with such force that Hera  pushed the baby away, causing her milk to scatter across the night sky.

This incident  gave birth to the luminous trail we now know as the Galaxy. It is also called the Milky Way, having translated the first part of the word directly from the Greek word  «γάλα» (gála), milk. 

As we have seen in the previous post “Blame it on the Stars”, Ancient Greek has influenced many cosmic terms: 

• “Planet,” which derived from the  Greek “planítis,” (πλανήτης) reflects the ancient belief in wandering stars.

• “Cosmos” comes from the word «κόσµος» (order or jewel) which shows us that the Greeks that the universe was ordered. In Greek philosophy, the cosmos represented the harmonious and orderly arrangement of the universe, including everything in existence. This term found its way into Latin and eventually into English, capturing the idea of the well-ordered and interconnected nature of the world. 

• “Comet,” is rooted in “komítes,” (κοµήτης), referring to the long-haired wonders that traverse the heavens. 

• “Asteroid,” comes from the Greek “asteroidís,” (ἀστεροειδής), a star-like celestial bodies which is neither a planet nor a comet.

The exploration of the cosmic logos unveils a fascinating connection between Greek myths and the words we use to describe the universe. The myth of Hercules, the creation of the Milky Way, and the birth of the term “galaxy” show the lasting impact of ancient narratives on our understanding of the cosmos. 

So, from now on, when gazing at the night sky, remember these ancient words that transcend time, connecting you to the Greek cultural and linguistic roots embedded  in the stars above.

Imagine you attend classes the whole year, participate in extracurricular activities, and follow a busy schedule of homework, sports, and music lessons. Every day, you wake up early and go to bed at the same time, balancing a demanding schedule. Sometimes, it can all feel a bit overwhelming. But then, you pause, you take a wonderful break, a moment to rest and recharge, and without even realizing it, you are using an Ancient Greek word, again! 

Παῦσις (pron. páf-sis, meaning pause) is the word that is still used to describe a  temporary stop or break in activity, which allows us to take a breath and gather our thoughts. As summer unfolds, this is the best time for me to embrace the concept of παῦσις, taking a moment to relax and be inspired and come back refreshed and more energized. 

So, I will be taking a small summer break, but I will be back in September with more  fascinating words and stories from the Ancient Greek world. Until then, I encourage you all to take your own moments of παῦσις, enjoy the summer, and try to revise our words because there is much more coming up, soon! Also, I suggest listening to this beautiful piece of music by the group Παῦσις which I think perfectly captures the essence of taking a pause.

Imagine you’re feeling unwell, and your mother calls the doctor to help you feel better. Did you know that by calling this doctor, the pediatrician, she is using a word that comes directly from ancient Greece? This week, we will journey into the past and uncover the secrets of another tiny, but mighty word. In fact, it is so important that the Greeks used it as the root for naming both education and play, two concepts that are essential in our lives. The word is …  

ΠΑΙΣ! 

Παῖς (pron. pés, meaning child) is the root of many words we use today related to children, teaching, and learning. This little word has traveled through time, influencing our language and how we talk about both education and care. 

Παῖς gave us: 

• Pediatrician: The doctor who specializes in caring for children. The word combines παῖς with ἰατρός (iatrós), meaning doctor. 

• Pedagogy: This is the art or science of teaching. It comes from παῖς and ἀγωγὴ (agogí, yes, just like Elliniki Agogi!), meaning education, so it literally means “the  education of a child.” 

• Pedagogue: An old-fashioned word for a teacher, this word also combines παῖς and ἀγωγός, highlighting the role of a teacher as a guide for children. 

• Paideia: A concept that encompasses the upbringing and education of children,  reflecting the broadest aspects of cultural education. 

• Encyclopedia: A comprehensive reference book with information on a wide range  of subjects which combines παιδεία with ἐν+κύκλος (en + cyclos, mean. in circle), all-encompassing. 

But, it also gave us …  

WikiPedia!  

A modern reference work combining "wiki" (a Hawaiian word meaning quick) with  παιδεία / paideia - pedia, reflecting its nature as a fast, accessible source of  knowledge.

All these ancient words show the importance of the Ancient Greek language, which has deeply influenced educational and scientific vocabulary internationally, proving that the wisdom of the past continues to shape our present.

So next time you visit your pediatrician, engage in paideia, look something up in an encyclopedia, or even wikipedia, remember the ancient roots of these words. By using them, you honor the timeless legacy of ancient Greek and connect to a rich history of knowledge and care.

It’s been a busy week for our little gang. First we travelled a long long time across the Pacific to the United States only to run into…. a hurricane!

Fortunately we were able to find a very safe place to stay, though we did spend a lot of time on the wall of the eye of the hurricane. Do you want to see what it looked like? This was actually a calmer moment… the lights swung from the pressure of the wind!

All throughout the city there are still a lot of people without electricity and the internet… but we were just able to find a connection, so we can send something to you today. As it’s been quite hectic, we thought we’d re-run an old (but appropriate) ancient Greek word of the week. So please enjoy learning a bit more about the skies above!

Blame it on the Stars!

In the vast expanse of the cosmos (in Greek «κόσµος», meaning “order” or “jewel”), the Greeks found inspiration in the celestial bodies and created the word «ἄστρον» (ástron - meaning  “star”). 

You may not be surprised to learn that many, many words relating to space come from ancient Greece. Let’s see how this celestial connection unites language, culture and science! Today we’ll look at a few of them:

Astronomy

The term “astronomy” is the study of stars and celestial phenomena (the Greek «φαινόµενα» is pronounced exactly the same.) Derived from «ἄστρον» and «νόµος» (nómos - meaning “law” or “arrangement,”) astronomy explores the laws about the cosmos and evolved from ancient observations to a sophisticated field. 

Telescope

The word «τηλεσκόπιον» (tilescópion, from «τῆλε», “far” and «σκοπῶ» “to look closely,”) helped astronomy tremendously with the invention of the telescope. This instrument allowed people to discover the details of stars and galaxies previously invisible to the naked eye. 

Astrology

Beyond scientific exploration, the Greeks ventured into the mystical realm of  “astrology” («ἀστρολογία»), where celestial bodies' positions at birth are thought to influence events here on earth. The word “horoscope,” from «ὡροσκόπος» (hοroskόpos), combines “time” (ὥρα) with the same verb found in “telescope,” σκοπῶ, offering personalized insights into personality and future, based in celestial positions. 

Even the word “disaster” finds its roots in the Greek “δύσαστρον” (dísastron), from  “δύς” meaning “bad” and “ἄστρον” (we know what this term means! ), showing us that people believed that unfavorable events were influenced by the planets and the stars. 

Greek-derived terms form a linguistic bridge to the world’s ever-lasting fascination with stars. From the precision of astronomy and the allure of astrology, to the capabilities of the telescope and the predictions of horoscopes, these terms shape our exploration and understanding of the cosmos. 

So, the next time life takes an unexpected turn, one might playfully exclaim, “Blame it on the stars,” as appreciation to the enduring influence of celestial words on our human experience.

Hello Classical Kids! 

Today I thought it might be fun to look into a tiny little Ancient Greek word so important, that our lives literally depend on it. It is strong, sturdy, and – like most Ancient Greek words – timeless. Are you ready to uncover another secret from the past? 

3, 2, 1, ΒΙΟΣ.  

Βίος (pron. víos, meaning life) is responsible for many words like biology, biography, antibiotics, and microbe. But βίος also influenced the Latin word for life, vita, which gave us other words we still use today like vital, vitamins, and even survive and revive! 

Let’s take a closer look… 

Βίος gave us:  

• Biology: Τhe science that explores all living things, combines βίος with λόγος (lógos), meaning study or science. 

• Biography: Α story of someone's life, a word derived from βίος and γράφειν (gráphin), meaning to write. 

• Antibiotics: Medicines that fight off harmful bacteria, this word combines βίος with ἀντί (antí), meaning against. 

• Probiotics: Combining βίος with προ (pro), meaning for, probiotics are good  bacteria that help keep our digestive system healthy.  

Vita gave us:  

• Vitamins: They get their name from vita because they are vital for our health since they help our bodies grow strong and stay healthy. 

• Vital: In other words, absolutely necessary for life. For example, water and oxygen are vital for our survival. 

• Survive: This word combines sub- (under) with vivere (to live). 

• Revive: Combining re- (again) with vivere (to live), it means to bring back to life or consciousness. 

These words time-traveled shaping how we talk about life today. Learning about the etymology of the words we use makes us realize how deeply connected we are to the past.

So next time you read a biography, study biology, or even take your vitamins, remember the ancient roots of these words. By using them, you are contributing to the legacy of Ancient Greek, reminding us that, like ΒΙΟΣ, it is a strong, sturdy and timeless bridge that connects the past to the present.

How can it be that a telephone, a television, a telescope, a telegram, and telepathy have anything in common? They are not all objects. They are not all communication tools. They are not even all things you can touch or see! But they do share the same prefix, the first part of the word: τῆλε (têle), which means “far.” 

This tiny word has traveled through time to help us name some of the most amazing inventions around. Let's see how it connects the ancient world to our lives today!

Think about the telephone; it comes from τῆλε (tíle) meaning “far” and φωνή (phoní) meaning “voice.” 

The telescope: combines τῆλε (tíle) with σκοπεῖν (skopín), meaning “to look,” since the telescope lets you see stars and planets that are incredibly far away. 

And then there’s the television: it mixes τῆλε (tíle) with the Latin word visio, meaning “sight.” 

Now, telepathy is another fascinating word; it combines τῆλε (tíle) with πάθος (páthos), meaning “feeling.” Telepathy is the idea of sending thoughts or feelings to someone far away without speaking.

The word τῆλε is in many other interesting terms like telegraph (τῆλε + γράφειν, to write) and telekinesis (τῆλε + κίνησις, movement).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw even more words using τῆλε: telemedicine lets doctors help patients without being in the same room. Teleconferences let people work together from different places. Even tele-Town Halls let politicians talk to lots of people without anyone leaving home. These words show how the ancient Greeks' ideas still live on.

Time flies when you are having fun… seriously, it’s always interesting to think about just how relative time feels… but deep philosophical thoughts aside, it’s also a good reminder from time to time that we need to review.

It’s a super important aspect of learning a language, as any polyglot will tell you. Learn, review, repeat is the recipe! So today we have a bunch of words that we actually first learned in March…

Fold up the pieces of paper (or roll them into scrolls!) and put them into a bowl, cup or jar. 

[Please note, the picture below is not of this month’s review vocabulary. I don’t actually have access to a printer at the moment, but this game was a super big hit! So, once we do, I’ll do it again. The downloadable PDFs - for both sections - do have the latest vocabulary to review.)

Have children take turns pulling out the word and trying to act it out. When they guess correctly, make sure they recite the word three times in ancient Greek and English. You can also play the game as pictionary and draw instead of acting. 

Once they know the words better, you can cut off just the ancient Greek words for a more advanced version.

To make flashcards, don’t cut along the middle line, instead fold them in half so you can first practice the words:

After you have practiced them a few times, cut them in half so you can mix and match the words and pictures.

Ancient Memory Match

Take the cut out words and pictures from the Flashcard section above and flip them all over so only the blank side is showing. Place them in neat rows. Flip over two at a time, if they are matching, remove them from the board and get a point. If they aren’t a match, flip them back and try again. Once all the cards have been matched, the person with the most points wins.

We timed how long it would take to do it to make it an extra game - and extra fun!

After a few rounds, we then made it even more difficult. I cut all the flashcards in half at a diagonal and then mixed them up. It became a puzzle-flashcard-activity. Frida wanted to make sure we got our ‘own’. So that can easily be an extra challenge - kids have to find their specific picture first, then match it up, then match it up with the word. 

We added another level by having Owly and Snowy try themselves:

As the ancient stones of Greece still whisper stories of valor and virtue, the Olympic  Games stand as a testament to the ceaseless wonder of human spirit and athletic excellence. Approaching the 2024 Olympics in Paris, I thought it would be nice to explain and explore the connections between the Greek and the English terms of the Olympics.

The name “Olympic” comes from Olympia, a city in the western Peloponnese where the  ancient Olympic Games were held, established in honor of Zeus. Olympia was one of the most significant religious centers in ancient Greece, and every four years, athletes from city-states across the region gathered to compete in events ranging from running and wrestling to chariot racing.

During the Olympics, a sacred truce was declared, allowing safe travel for all participants. While the Games were named after Olympia, they were deeply connected to the gods of Mount Olympus, the home of the gods. Thus, competing in the Olympics was not just about physical skills, but also about embodying the virtues  of the gods and striving for excellence. 

In Greek, the Olympic Games are called “Ὀλυμπιακοὶ Ἀγῶνες” (Olympiakí Agόnes). The word "Ἀγῶνες" (singular ἀγών, plural ἀγῶνες) is often translated as “Games” in English, but its meaning is much richer: for the Greeks, “Agónes” refers to contests of great significance, involving struggle, effort, and a pursuit of excellence.

It encompasses athletic competition but also a spiritual and moral dimension, reflecting the participants' dedication to achieving their highest potential. Ἀγὼν (agón) is also the root word of 'agony,' highlighting the struggle between protagonist and antagonist. 

Thus, while the term Olympic Games in English emphasizes the competitive and  celebratory aspects of the event, the same term Ὀλυμπιακοὶ Ἀγῶνες in Greek reminds us of a deeper significance; the testament to human perseverance, honor, and timeless pursuit of greatness. 

So now… let the Agónes begin!

I live in the bustling heart of Greece, Athens, where opportunities to immerse myself in nature are few. However, whenever I escape to an island or retreat to a mountain, I find  myself captivated by the harmonious chaos of the natural world—a beautiful and  enduring mystery, but a profound revelation, too. So, this week, I decided to explore a  concept deeply rooted in our understanding of the environment and which we often miss  when living in big cities: Φύσις. 

The word Φύσις, (mean. Nature, pron. Phýsis), from which we derive the English term “physics,” originates from the Greek verb φύειν (pronounced phýin), meaning to grow. It’s a concept deeply embedded in the way ancient Greeks understood the world around  them- not just as a physical space but as a living, breathing entity that evolves and  changes.

This concept extends to several English terms, like for instance: physical which  relates to the material aspects of nature, physician which emphasizes the care of the  physical body, and physiology which explores the functions of living systems.

In ancient philosophy, Φύσις was the fundamental principle of change and development in the universe. Heraclitus famously said, “You cannot step into the same river twice,” highlighting that nature is in a constant state of flux, always renewing and never remaining  static. 

In mythology, Φύσις embodies the endless energy and vitality of the natural world. In myths, she is like Gaia (Γαῖα, pron. Yéa), the Earth Mother. But, while Gaia is the body and substance of Earth, Physis is its breath and spirit, the unseen force that animates and perpetuates growth and life. 

Today we visualize Φύσις when, for example, we go to the forest, or when we observe the seasonal transformation of a meadow, watching it burst into color in spring and slowly golden in autumn, each phase revealing nature's continuous renewal and resilience, reminding us to live in harmony with the natural rhythm of life rather than against it. 

So next time you step out into nature - hopefully much more often than I do - close your eyes, listen to the whispers of the earth, feel the growth around you, and let your senses soak in the timeless dance of Φύσις. In this way, you will connect not just with the world  around you, but also with the ancient wisdom that reminds us of our place within this timeless, beautiful flux.

1. Nature Journaling: Start a nature journal to document your observations and  thoughts about the natural world. Note the changes you see in a particular place over time, such as a park, garden, or natural trail. This can help illustrate the concept of Φύσις through personal experience. 

2. Photography Project: Create a photo essay capturing the essence of Φύσις.  Focus on capturing images that show growth, decay, and transformation in nature.  This could be seasonal changes, plant growth, or even weather patterns.

Have you ever shouted into a big empty space and heard your voice come bouncing back? Well,  that, my friends, is an echo, a sound that travels through the air, hits an object, and then returns to  our ears. The word echo comes from Ancient Greek mythology and teaches us about history and  myths while explaining a scientific phenomenon. How can that be possible? Let’s see! 

In Greek mythology, Echo was a talkative nymph who loved using her voice. To distract the  goddess Hera from the mischiefs of other gods, Echo would engage her in long conversations.  However, when Hera discovered Echo's tricks, she punished her by allowing Echo to only repeat the  last few words she heard from others, not speak on her own. 

This beautiful nymph gave us the word echo and in Greek it is ἠχὼ (pronounced “ihó”). Today, we still use echo to describe a sound that is repeated or reflected back to the listener. Just like the nymph who could only repeat others' words, sound waves of an echo bounce back in a similar manner.
