Animal inventions, Cleopatra’s travel, King Tut’s eyes and his mummy grandparents...
Classical KIDS Email Replies
Dear Classical KIDS,
How is everyone doing? I know for our friends in the northern hemisphere summer is just beginning... It's a time to soak up the sun, hang out with friends and enjoy the fresh air.
But just because the weather has turned fine doesn’t mean our Classical KIDS have stopped their love of learning... in fact we received some awesome KIDS responses to Owly’s video at the Sphinx. Owly had a few cool challenges, which (as you can see below) the kids totally nailed. Read on for amazing animal inventions, Cleopatra’s travel, King Tut’s eyes and his mummy grandparents…
But first, if you didn’t get a chance to learn about the Riddle of the Sphinx, you can do so here:
We’ll have another Owly video for you shortly!
All the best,
Anya & Frida

Hello Frida and Owly,
It’s me, Gold! What’s it like in Egypt? Because I’ve never been there…THAT’S so sad. What’s the candy like? What about the ice cream? All of the treats?
I made a half bird / half robot. The bird stands for freedom, and the Robot stands for smartness!
Bye Frida & Owly!
- Gold (age 8)
Frida: Hi Gold, Egypt is interesting but very, very crowded. The treats they have in Egypt are these things called Baklava. It’s kind of sticky…like honey.
I LOVE the idea of a robot-bird! I made an axolotl-puffer fish, what do you think I should call it ?
Hi Frida & Owly,
I wonder what you are doing there… Do you know where your mom and dad are? While you are traveling, what do you take with you for fun? I like to travel with a blanket, stuffed animals, and a toothbrush and toothpaste. Do you travel like an Egyptian Queen?
My statue is a zombie cat. The zombie part scares off the people trying to steal the gold. The Kitty part is cute so the thieves come over - they get bit in just one bite - then they are bye, bye!
Happy travels!
- Pumpkin (age 6)
Frida: Hi Pumpkin, the zombie cat sounds awesome! I travel with my mom and dad, my clothes and some toys. I also like to travel with a stuffed animal. I wish I could travel like an Egyptian Queen! That would be cool... How do you think Cleopatra travelled?
Mom’s Note: This is one of my favorite paintings of Cleopatra. It is called the Meeting of Antony and Cleopatra’ (1885) by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema:
Hi Frida & Owly,
I think the sphinx is the Egyptians’ ancestors, and they are protecting the jewelry - to make their ancestors happy and informed.
If they steal the jewelry, the ancestors will go to the house of whoever is stealing and put a curse on them, to remind them that the jewelry is important.
My statue is called Hope and Courage. Half human and half snake. The snake part means fearless, speed, and bravery, The human part means thinking, believing, and making sure.
Have a fun trip!
Eleven (age 9)
Frida: Hi Eleven, I think that maybe the Egyptians are STILL sphinxes, just in disguise! The ancient jewelry is really beautiful and stunning. I can see why they want to protect it!
What’s your favorite type of stone? There is a type of stone Egypt is famous for—Lapis lazuli, and it’s even in the eyes of king Tut's mask! (The one they put on his coffin.)
Hi Frida & Owly!
Thank you very much! I like your owl. Do you see mummies? Did you see zombies there? Is there electricity there? I think not, because in Egypt there was no electricity. Are there songs there?
My Cat Nap Spider Nap is half human/half spider. It can shoot webs…Because if there is an enemy there he can shoot webs. The human part can dodge things.
I think the sphinx was a mummy and made to freak people up.
Thank you very much!
Goodbye,
Stockdale (age 6)
Hi Stockdale, in ancient Egypt there was no electricity, but now there is. We didn’t see any zombies, though I did see two mummies, King Tut's grandparents! What do you think King Tut's grandparents' names were?
Hi Frida,
What did they eat in the past, in Egypt? I think they ate grapes a lot.
Where did the people building the sphinx and pyramids sleep?
This is a half bunny - half capybara. The capybara stands for peace, good luck and harmony. The bunny half stands for fertility, new life and spring!
Your friend,
- Capybara Girl (age 9)
Hi Capybara girl,
I made an axolotl puffer fish. Axolotl stands for growth because they can regrow their legs, arms, tail, brain, gills, and heart! The puffer fish stands for intelligence. Capybaras are one of my favorite animals, they can hold their breath for six minutes! Meat was a luxury. They usually eat bread, lettuce, and GRAPES!
I have another challenge for you…For your animals, can you write out a riddle??? Just like the Sphinx? Do you like my riddle above?
