Dear Classical KIDS,
When it comes to learning about the ancient world there is no better place to begin than with Homer.
This is because the Iliad and Odyssey were literally fundamental to the Greco-Roman culture. Kids would have learned the stories by heart, would have known all the characters from Penelope to Priam - and I’m certain would have Odysseus action figures and re-enacted Achilles-Hector fights.
As such, the ideas and references from these epics were sprinkled throughout everything. You can find it in Plato’s dialogues, the great tragic plays, in the art and armor.
But who was the famed blind bard? Did he exist? What were these incredible important poems and how we can remember him through games and play?
Next week, we’ll move on to our next historical figure from the ancient world… but today you can catch up on all things Homer!
All the best,
